My main concerns with variable slot time would be breaking existing contracts, if any large contract has hardcoded the fix 12s slot time as an assumed constant, it would break user land. I see that its an ongoing identification, but I wanna make sure we don’t break any significant deployed contract.
- Ansgar Dietrichs
Replying to "Not seeing this in t..." It’s a good question. I think I saw a network wide latency analysis a while ago, worth looking into more!
- Dustin
"continuous" decreases in slot time create, arguably, more create more disruption than figuring somewhat larger jumps. it's true both that the main issue is variable slot times at all, but also, all these infra assuptions etc etc have to be re-evaluated separately each decrease
- Kalo | Obol

Replying to "My main concerns wit..." We have this assumption in Lido. But we are ready to upgrade to the version that removes this assumption
- Vasiliy Shapovalov
Replying to "Not seeing this in t..." 10s shouldn’t change the pressure that much imo
- Luca Donno | L2BEAT
Replying to "My main concerns wit..." Arbitrum has this assumption for the challenge period length but they can just upgrade and fix it
- jonny
I'd say that we'd need to reach out to defi protocols that have fixed maturity times that rely on 12 second slots to calculate when their bonds mature (e.g. pendle)
- Ansgar Dietrichs
Reacted to "10s shouldn’t change the pressure that much imo" with 👍
- Dustin
the more changes in slot time, the more nonlinearities, the more boundary conditions, the more special cases. There won't be that many of these, potentially, before more fundamental redesigns are required. .so adding lots of small changes has its own csts
- Justin Traglia
Say with 10-second slots, would we keep the same gas limit and blob limits? Or try to scale them, eg (10/12) * gas_limit.

- Isidoros Passadis
Replying to "Not seeing this in t..." Happy to ask lido curated NOs to help out here if it would help, however any test not on mainnet is difficult to reason about (because PBS plays a big role and there’s nothing like mainnet)

I see that its an ongoing identification, but I wanna make sure we don’t break any significant deployed contract." this wasn't really possible before we put the slot number in blocks. Until then you could only have certainty that something is after some timestamp, or you would have used 4788 to prove against the beacon root - not sure any contract ever did that
- Mario Vega
Replying to "Say with 10-second s..." The EIP mentions that at fork boundary the gas limit is scaled

- Barnabas
Replying to "Say with 10-second s..." I feel like it would be a nice scaling goal to aim to keep the same gas limit and blob limit values for H* if we do end up doing lower slots

Replying to "Say with 10-second s..." Scaling down gas limit per block is also odd. It may break existing work flow
- Dustin
Replying to "Say with 10-second..." gas limits this should be done intentionally
- Ansgar Dietrichs
Replying to "Say with 10-second s..." no the idea would be that the throughput per second would remain the same, or even go down, when slot times are reduced
- Satyajit
Replying to "Just a 12 -> 10 sp..." It is the first step towards even shorter ones in future ?
- cayman
Replying to "Just a 12 -> 10 spee..." possibly, to make future changes much easier? gets the bugs out of slot timing code

Replying to "Say with 10-second slots, would we keep the same gas limit and blob limits? Or try to scale them, eg (10/12) * gas_limit." scaling down shouldn't break things as we have a tx gas limit that is already below the block gas limit
- terence
Replying to "Say with 10-second s..." Right so per block will go down. Question is what that breaks. Atomic bundle requiring more than X gas can no longer fit in one block

- Toni Wahrstätter
Replying to "Say with 10-second slots, would we keep the same gas limit and blob limits? Or try to scale them, eg (10/12) * gas_limit." but those bundles are not possible today. They would only be at 300M gas limit and we then go down a bit

I think it’s clear at this point that a very large jump (say down to 6s) will not have room in a hard fork any time soon, maybe not before 2030. so I’d rather get to 8 (or 6) incrementally over several forks, rather than sticking with 12s for 5 more years
- Isidoros Passadis
Nothing written up, just more missed proposals than others (and sometimes even issues with attestation timing and/or head votes) and especially when it comes to PBS stuff (it’s since drastically been improved since we onboarded African and LATAM operators 2 years ago, but it took a lot of work on their side from infra improvement perspective)
- Stefan Starflinger
Reacted to "It is the first step towards even shorter ones in future ?" with 👍
- Lion dapplion
Replying to "Just a 12 -> 10 spee..." Our testing should be good enough to deploy things in main net that work. The only justification to go moderate is to give slack for ZK to catchup
- terence
Replying to "Say with 10-second s..." Hm ok. If you guys say that decreasing max gas limit / block doesn’t break anything then I trust y’all
- Oisin Kyne
Replying to "Not seeing this in t..." Do you have any write up on issues they encounter by chance? don’t have a write up, but the quick answer is far away nodes get blocks late, and thus get incorrect head more often than near nodes. Head vote accuracy is ~20% of a validators rewards, so its already very punitive to be in this position. (maybe ePBS makes this less bad, its mev timing games that are particularly causing this, rather than when proposals are honestly broadcasted at t=0)

Will this be sending payloads in columns? That probably won’t work with ePBS
- vitalik
Replying to "One could prove th..." also I don't think we actually want to encourage people to start hardcoding zk-proofs against blocks or state quite yet better to wait until new state tree, everything ssz, and ethereum's long-term hash function (looks like blake is leading now) gets finalized otherwise those upgrades become harder on dapp devs
- Barnabas
regarding 8142: could we please finish shipping partial cells and sparse blobpools before we try to introduce yet another design change? Currently we don’t seem to be the place where we need infinite blob growth, so I’d rather we focus on finishing the open topics, before we CFI a new idea.

A branch is always prone to become stale Confusing to state as an advantage over a branch because a release is frozen in time, so it’s always “stale” by definition.

Not really. I care about the nakamoto more than the long tail. We’ll have some small ideological solo stakers and home stakers no matter what we do. But the small group of orgs that control > 51% of stake can censor the full chain without penalty. There is no data for allowing one to say is “overpaying”" Where is the argument for overpaying? I am saying “lowest issuance among any network, pretty much any asset or commodity”. That is backed up by data. If you say “more staking is happening” is the data point for overpaying - it isn’t. That could occur even with the 1% rate. Would that still be overpaying?

Replying to "From my POV, Ethereu..." I feel like we are severely overpaying for security. i think the data implies otherwise, the nakamoto has been down only for 2 years, and this curve will make it worse. The staking ratio only dictates finality reversion, which isn’t realistically ethereum’s risk. The risk is attesters refusing to atest to blocks they don’t like. That doesn’t get them slashed or penalised in any way (so long as >50% of stake weight is doing it)

Replying to "It’s not only about ..." yes, splitting includers to a different cohort than attesters may change this statement. FOCIL only constrains builders not attesters right now

Replying to "has anyone developed..." I think the onus of having them is more on the side of change - it’s true that status quo is also a choice but it has at least some clarity like nakamoto coeff good, client diversity good, community stakers good
- potuz
Why are these keys a PQ danger if they haven’t been used ever to sign anything?

My question for NC, is this EIP particularly cruel to stakeHound (~30k eth), they notably have lost their bls withdrawal key, so this EIP will brick their eth. They already can’t get their eth back, but they can at least make ~900 eth per year at the moment. Do we need to cut that off on them by h star or can this wait to later?

what part of the proposed pq registry requires retiring all 0x00 validators now? If an active 0x00 validator can register a pq key using its current signing key before the pq fork, could we instead exit only validators that fail to register?
- jochem-brouwer
Antwoord verzenden naar "My question for NC..." This is a good point, if you did not do could you raise this point on the magicians thread?
- potuz
Replying to "Why are these keys a..." Yes but until that pub key is shown there’s no way to crack it, so an attack requires censoring until you crack the exposed key
- potuz
Replying to "Why are these keys a..." I don’t think this is possible even post quantum
- Dustin
How is one kind of pre-PQ validator less PQ-compatible than any other pre-PQ validator?

Replying to "has anyone developed..." The way I read the current proposal it main metrics are just % staked and %issuance validator set quality is quietly discarded as a goal. I’d have much less issues with it if it was clearly stated tbh
- cayman
I think the idea is to only have to deal with one type of validator credential rather than multiple paths
- Dustin
There will still be 0x01 and 0x02 presumably?
- Parithosh Jayanthi
This would be the last topic for today. We’ll do EIP-8333 & Engine API sync status (EIP-TBD) on the next ACDC.
- Isidoros Passadis
Replying to "Why are these keys a..." Because there’s a race at that point?

0x00 can still be ejected. You can still change the withdrawal credential of an exited validator.
- potuz
Replying to "Why are these keys a..." You can’t crack a key with a quantum computer before a tx is included in Ethereum
- Greg K | Lido
Reacted to "what part of the p..." with 👍

We could force exit all 0x00 in H*, and announce that we yeeting all BLS ops in I* so ppl would have 1yr heads up notice to not lose access to their eth
- Barnabas
unlikely we doing PQ before I* anyway

I don’t see the point of this proposal, either we retire them now or we retire them when we move to PQ and they haven’t registered. What does retiring them now gets us?
- Ben Edgington
Replying to "Why are these keys a PQ danger if they haven’t been used ever to sign anything?" Another argument for faster slots - keep ahead of the quantum computer key cracking speed.
- Isidoros Passadis
Replying to "Why are these keys a..." Dunno, how long would it take?

If it causes problems PQ, only force this at PQ boundary
- Greg K | Lido
Reacted to "I don’t see the p..." with 👍
- Barnabas
Replying to "I don’t see the poin..." I think the idea is to basically show that this type of validators shouldn’t come onboard anymore
- potuz
As with any other validator that doesn’t register
- Barnabas
Replying to "I don’t see the poin..." so we should indicate that this is deprecated, and we can’t support it further
- potuz
Replying to "I don’t see the poin..." This has nothing to do with the exiting and drain EIPs
- Isidoros Passadis
Replying to "Why are these keys a..." Censoring is perhaps doable (eg even if it’s just the RPC that’s compromised)
- potuz
Replying to "I don’t see the poin..." Not allowing deposits is much simpler and useful if anything

Maybe a suggestion: perhaps 0x0 validators can submit a zk proof of the preimage and then of the public key?

Replying to "Thats a good issuanc..." what if the real burn is the friends we made along the way?

I disagree strongly with exiting validators that can be potentially validating now, without needing to exit them.
