Call summary
Targets
- •bal-devnet-7 launches Monday; Glamsterdam devnet-4 targets EOW (day or two after) — 00:36:50
- •Glamsterdam alpha-8 spec release as soon as possible to enable devnet-4 targeting — 00:33:05
Decisions
- •ETH/70 and ETH/71 included in Glamsterdam devnet-4; ETH/72 stays on blob devnets only — 00:09:36
- •All gas-limit and dual-deadline spec changes (consensus-specs #5223, #5235, #5236, #5212, #5210) target Glamsterdam devnet-4 — 00:22:48
- •Builder deposit overflow fix: cap gas limit to 190M for devnet-4; rely on EIP-7688 in a later devnet to remove cap — 00:46:00
- •Dual-deadline PRs to be merged today by Justin with same deadline values; no code changes required yet from other clients — 00:32:51
Highlights
- Hegota Eips:
- ·Sukun presented committee attestation broadcast spec (ethp2p #5): batching sigs, reducing gossip overhead, lowering mesh D to 4; targets 4x committee size increase enabling 8-slot epochs; proposed for Hegota — 00:54:20
- ·EIP-8025 (optional execution proofs / zkEVM) presented by EF zkEVM team; opt-in only, no consensus gating; Lighthouse and Prysm implementations exist; proposed for Hegota — 01:13:53
- ·Two EIPs not reached today (return deposits for distinct credentials; custom suite thresholds) deferred to next ACDC — 01:35:22
- Ssz Engine Api:
- ·Two competing SSZ Engine API proposals: Barnabas (REST transport only, no naming changes) vs. Marius (full naming refactor); Nethermind has shipped Barnabas approach with 5-10x JSON speedup — 00:47:12
- ·Decision deferred to ACDE/ACDT; feature remains optional and not tied to a hard fork — 00:52:39
- Builder Deposits:
- ·Prysm benchmarks: 8,192 deposits batch-verified in ~800ms; worst-case (all invalid) ~6s; pre-processing cache proposed as fix — 00:40:22
- ·Gas limit to be capped at 190M for devnet-4 to avoid 8,193 overflow; 7688 (forward-compatible SSZ) planned for later devnet to lift cap — 00:45:25
- ·Client optimizations (not a new deposit contract) agreed as the path forward for builder deposit processing — 00:46:00
- Glamsterdam Devnet Scoping:
- ·ETH/70 and ETH/71 confirmed for Glamsterdam devnet-4; ETH/72 deferred to blob devnets pending spec freeze — 00:07:19
- ·Target gas limit field moving from EL flag to CL-supplied payload attribute (consensus-specs #5235, execution-apis #796); EL devs asked to review before Monday — 00:13:51
- ·Consensus-specs #5223 (withdrawability delay for builder deposits) and #5236 (bid validation against target gas limit) also required for devnet-4 — 00:19:39
- ·Dual-deadline PRs (#5212, #5210) to be merged now with matching deadlines; reorg enforcement deferred until all clients implement — 00:23:43
Action Items
- •EL teams — EL devs review and approve execution-apis #796 (target gas limit in payload attributes) before Monday — 00:21:01
- •Lighthouse (kingy_sigp) — Lighthouse to share deposit-processing benchmark branch (matching Prysm glamsterdam-devnet-3-deposits branch) — 00:44:01
- •All CL/EL teams — Review EIP-8025 and provide feedback; read updated EIP PR (#11604) not the stale merged version — 01:12:26

Imho it can't be named exactly frozen unless we widely test it and in big networks across implementations

I want that and also the bid changes

fcu4 with targetgas

Btw, that's the eth/71 PR for devp2p. Some have reviewed it already, felix is also on it, but would then be great to have a few more eyes on it and get it merged: https://github.com/ethereum/devp2p/pull/264

- terence
Target here does not mean limit / 2 like today right? It literally means the limit
- Potuz
This needs to be in that devnet too

@terence it's not gas target is gas limit target

or rather target gas limit

Replying to "Target here does no..." Right, it's more "target to push the gas limit towards"
- Potuz
all clients have a default
- Potuz
today we send it to the builder

Replying to "When devnet4?" what el branch are you using? bal-devnet-7 launches next monday right?
- terence
- Justin Traglia
They sound reasonable to me, but we need other clients to weigh in.
- Justin Traglia
@Potuz I like the idea of using the same deadlines initially, then tweaking later. Could you make this change?
- Nico Flaig
lgtm
- Dustin
General skepicism of merging a mechanism specifically designed to be disabled
- Dustin
(dual deadlines)
- Potuz
would we need two PRs? then? I'd ask if we're fine with 6 seconds already @Justin Traglia cause we're mostly sending immediately now anyway
- Potuz
I wanted to reply to Dustin lol :)
- kingy_sigp

- Toni Wahrstätter
The EL needs a number for setting the appropriate gas limit. So CLs agreeing on an execution time ELs are guaranteed is necessary, so specing it makes sense, even if it's not a consensus rule.
- Iván | ethrex
Reacted to "Sure" with 🚢
- Justin Traglia
Replying to "@Potuz I like the id..." Not a strong opinion on this btw. I just thought it would give clients more time to implement this, since it wouldn’t block the new devnet.
- Barnabas
We usually go from spec to tooling
- Justin Traglia
Reacted to "We usually go from s..." with 👍
- Potuz
@Toni Wahrstätter I think the EL should really be working with 6 seconds execution for benches
- Potuz
this is a very reasonable target as discussed in Svalbard
- Potuz
we need to make sure that all clients do fit in that though
- Barnabas
alpha 8 by tomorrow?
- Justin Traglia
Replying to "alpha 8 by tomorrow?" As soon as possible 🙂
- Toni Wahrstätter
Reacted to @Toni Wahrstätter I ... with "🙏"
- Barnabas
Reacted to "As soon as possible ..." with 🚢
- Justin Traglia
- Potuz
Replying to "@Toni Wahrstätter I ..." The question is that with this we should also be working with a max of 2 seconds for broadcasting at the moment
- Potuz
Replying to "@Toni Wahrstätter I ..." So we would need to make sure of these boundaries and check if this is reasonable
- terence
The nice thing is you can delete these code after the fork in subsequent release
- Justin Traglia
Reacted to "The nice thing is yo..." with 👍
- Potuz
Reacted to "The nice thing is yo..." with 👍
- Toni Wahrstätter
Replying to "@Toni Wahrstätter I ..." Yeah, we should make sure to have "enough" time for propagation and would then set the gas limit based on the worst-case execution time ELs have
- Potuz
Replying to "The nice thing is yo..." I think it's useful anyway right? we just keep the pending queue with a prevalidated sig-checks and then processing pending deposits becomes faster
- CPerezz
Replying to "@Toni Wahrstätter I ..." We are working on this on the repricing-side too
- Potuz
Reacted to "We are working on th..." with 👏

Replying to "@Toni Wahrstätter I ..." Together with the P2P team. Hopefully we get some results soon. Already started at: https://github.com/ethpandaops/benchmarkoor/pull/236

Can discuss 5 scoping in ACDT
- Potuz
I would prefer we stop adding features and we complete implementations? dealing with full blob propagation and start actually testing forkchoice?
- Barnabas
Reacted to "Can discuss 5 scopin..." with 👍
- Potuz
we haven't done a single test of attestation accuracy and forkchoice testing
- Parithosh Jayanthi
- Toni Wahrstätter
The only EL solution is to change the deposit contract. So this should be solved on the CL somehow
- Etan (Nimbus)
One issue about deposit time is that most of the effort for Pectra was for hypothetical ZK VMs that want to prove beacon STF. Why did we reduce the number of attestations just to now make it way worse than it ever was? Just add a queue haha
- Etan (Nimbus)
we don’t need churn limits, just a signature ratelimit
- Barnabas
queue doesn’t solve the 8193 overflow issue
- Etan (Nimbus)
Replying to "One issue about depo..." the overflow issue is just pending 7688
- Parithosh Jayanthi
Replying to "One issue about depo..." *8193
- Barnabas
Reacted to "*8193" with 👍
- Etan (Nimbus)
Replying to "One issue about depo..." like, set gas limit to a way that avoids the problem, then go 7688
- Nico Flaig

- Etan (Nimbus)
where are clients on 7688? can add your branch to kurtosis https://github.com/ethereum/consensus-specs/pull/4630#issuecomment-4377125436

https://github.com/ethereum/execution-apis/pull/793 https://github.com/ethereum/execution-apis/pull/764
- Potuz
can you describe the difference in the two PRs? why are they two different proposals?
- Barnabas
Replying to "can you describe the..." Marius wants to refactor the whole engine api
- Potuz
we strongly support merging this. And I'll switch out of geth unless they implement this :)
- FLCL
We need help from a CL, a solid implementation we could test against
- Barnabas
Reacted to "We need help from a ..." with 💯
- FLCL
we support all stuff like progressive containers also
- Barnabas
Replying to "we strongly support ..." prysm implementation wen?
- Łukasz Rozmej
we support both SSZ and JSON at the same time
- Potuz
Replying to "we strongly support ..." there's a PR by Giulio under review, not sure of the status of that, seems that Nethermind opened a PR on top of that PR so it may be difficult to review and may be faster if we work this from scratch or get Nethermind + Erigon to agree to merge first
- Barnabas
Reacted to "there's a PR by Giul..." with 👍
- Łukasz Rozmej
This isn't urgent so we can wait for discusion to ACDT and ACDE
- lightclient
What was the question?
- Barnabas
Replying to "What was the questio..." how married are you to https://github.com/ethereum/execution-apis/pull/793 ?
- Dustin
Replying to "can you describe t..." yes it could use some refactoring
- lightclient
I don’t think there is a team position
- Barnabas
Replying to "can you describe the..." could we do this as a two step process tho?
- Barnabas
Replying to "can you describe the..." lets get ssz in first, then do the refactor?
- Barnabas
Reacted to "I don’t think there ..." with 👍
- lightclient
But will discuss internally before ACDT
- Dustin
Replying to "can you describe t..." a lot of the SSZ urgency seems to be due to slow JSON parsers
- lightclient
Replying to "can you describe the..." I think jacek also wanted to refactor?
- Parithosh Jayanthi
- Dustin
Replying to "can you describe t..." yeah
- Łukasz Rozmej
Reacted to "But will discuss int..." with 👍
- Potuz
let's get rid entirely of IHAVE IWANT for attestations please
- Łukasz Rozmej
Replying to "can you describe the..." We thought we had a very fast JSON RPC parser and in our synthetic testing routing though REST + SSZ is still 5x-10x faster (!)
- Barnabas
Replying to "can you describe the..." yeah JSON parsing is the biggest bottleneck by far for every EL / CLs
- Łukasz Rozmej
Replying to "can you describe the..." and we have AVX optimized json parser (numbers are from AVX-256, on AVX-512 path it might be only 2.5x-5x faster)
- Barnabas
whats the rollout plan for ethp2p? Is the idea to have ethp2p implemented by h* and cut over to it from libp2p at the fork transition, or do we plan to have both implemented and both running for a fork?
- Łukasz Rozmej
but good AVX-512 in only on Zen 5 CPU's
- Francesco Risitano
Replying to "can you describe the..." Json also has approx 2x overhead on payload size because it encodes bytes as hex nibbles which impacts transport
- Greg K | Lido
Reacted to "whats the rollout ..." with 👍

Reacted to "I have like 10 😁" with 🤣
- Greg K | Lido
As an incremental step, or even long term? MEaning, 4-slot rounds could be 2-slot rounds or 128K attester cap could be 256K attester cap?
- Greg K | Lido
Reacted to "Yes, this is usefu..." with 👍
- Ben Edgington
Replying to "How does this affect..." I'm not thinking in terms of attester caps right now. This would allow finality voting rounds to be shortened.

Replying to "if it’s optional doe..." @Barnabas if this is optional for full nodes that's more than fine to me. In some sense even not verifying the payload at all is kinda reasonable for a full node that trusts validators.

- Jihoon
Replying to "Is the PR based on G..." Of course, but I don't think there will be any significant change other than proof propagation time. The main change is verifying execution proof after calling newPayload.
- Potuz
Replying to "Is the PR based on G..." yeah the spec shouldn't change much I assume, but you get about 9 seconds instead of 2

i didn’t catch why it needs protocol changes for an optional mechanism
- Potuz
can we make it explicit that vals that opt in still need the EL to run? And that also validators should not wait to the proof verification to attest?

its currently in the spec yes (first part, not sure about the second)

Replying to "can we standardize..." zkevm = zkvm + guest program. team name is zkevm, effort is zkevm, some things like certain standards are properly zkvm. note i have not capitalized anything😉
- Potuz
Replying to "can we make it expli..." it seems to be locking on newPayload
- Toni Wahrstätter
But they still engage in propagating proofs, which might slow down blob + payload download and upload. No validator should use it, only non-validating nodes
- lightclient
thanks!

Replying to "i didn’t catch why it needs protocol changes for an optional mechanism" maybe it makes sense to make an option mandatory to be provided? (speculating)

Replying to "can we make it expli..." How does LH prototype handle this? @Francesco Risitano
