Call summary

Targets
  • bal-devnet-7 launch: end of day May 18 or early May 19 — 00:28:00
  • glamsterdam-devnet-4: after bal-devnet-7 stabilizes; requires separate client branches — 00:43:47
  • glamsterdam-devnet-5: EIP-8038, EIP-2780, EIP-8246, EIP-7954 (pending benchmarks) — 00:50:59
Decisions
  • EIP-7954 (64KB code size) targets glamsterdam-devnet-5, not current devnet — 00:14:04
  • SELFDESTRUCT removal deferred to next fork (Hegota); propose proper EIP for Bogota — 00:25:05
  • bal-devnet-7 client participation gated on passing tests-bal@v7.2.0 — 00:29:13
  • EIP-8246 targets glamsterdam-devnet-5 alongside EIP-7708 — 00:56:33
Highlights
  • Ssz Engine Api:
    • ·Two competing REST-SSZ Engine API proposals: PR #764 (Barnabas, minimal changes) vs PR #793 (Marius, cleaner REST structure); Nethermind and Erigon already merged #764 — 01:00:49
    • ·No resolution reached; decision deferred to ACDE Thursday; key debate is shipping fast vs. doing it cleanly — 01:10:27
  • Testing Progress:
    • ·tests-bal@v7.2.0 releasing post-call; adds ~9 new AT37 tests clients must pass before joining bal-devnet-7 — 00:26:09
    • ·Benchmarking moving to bal-devnet-7; clients urged to merge state access optimizations (batch I/O, state root calculation) urgently — blocker for final repricing numbers — 00:33:12
  • Contract Code Size:
    • ·EIP-7954 proposed to raise max contract code size from 32KB to 64KB; already CFI'd at 32KB, this bumps further — 00:08:22
    • ·Consensus: target glamsterdam-devnet-5; benchmark all three values (32, 48, 64KB) before finalizing; do not change current devnet scope — 00:14:04
  • Repricing And Eips:
    • ·EIP-7904 (compute repricings) tentatively dropped — most clients exceed 100M gas/s target post-BAL optimizations — 00:45:37
    • ·EIP-8038 and EIP-2780 targeted for glamsterdam-devnet-5 with placeholder numbers to de-risk implementation; final values pending benchmarks — 00:50:59
    • ·EIP-8246 (remove self-destruct gas burn) targeted for glamsterdam-devnet-5; EIP-7708 lists it as a dependency — 00:53:16
  • Fork Status And Schedule:
    • ·bal-devnet-7 launching today/tomorrow; gated on tests-bal@v7.2.0 release — 00:25:40
    • ·ethrex, Nethermind, Nimbus passing tests; Besu missing some tests; Geth branch not ready until mid-week — 00:27:22
    • ·glamsterdam-devnet-4 requires separate branch from bal-devnet-7 due to engine API gas limit change (PR #796); Nethermind and Erigon already done — 00:43:47
Action Items
  • All EL client teams — Client teams: report post-state root calculation optimization status in BAL Discord thread — 00:35:49
  • Felix / client teams — Review and merge eth/71 devp2p PR #264 (mandatory for bal-devnet-7) — 00:30:42
  • ACDE Thursday — Decide between execution-apis PR #764 vs #793 (REST-SSZ Engine API) — 01:11:11

  • Łukasz Rozmej

We kind of should do both 32 and 64 tests and compare them

  • Mario Vega

There’s a small caveat on 64KB if I recall correctly: Some EXT* benchmarks require contracts with maximum contract size to be pre-deployed to the network so we can query those, so we’d need to redeploy, it’s not difficult but just so we are aware

  • Louis

Replying to "There’s a small cave..." But there would be no such contract on mainnet before we upgrade.

  • Mario Vega

Replying to "There’s a small cave..." I meant devnets, bloatnet, etc

Has this EIP been CFI’d by ACD-E even?

  • Toni Wahrstätter

going from 32 to 64, while keeping the same nr of contract code loaded into ram, we'd have to double the price, independently from access time. Is this possible at 300M gas for example?

  • Ben Adams

Replying to "Has this EIP been CF..." yes

    So do I merge it?

  • Toni Wahrstätter

Replying to "going from 32 to 64,..." Is this checked even with higher gas limit, e.g. 400M or 500M? Also, what is the gas limit where clients might run into memory issues?

  • Łukasz Rozmej

won't we get (small but vocal?) community pushback?

I’d oppose adding a brand new EIP so late. Can’t we just repricce selfdestruct to insane high prices and do 0 refunds? Which basically the same as deprecated.

  • Paweł Bylica

Replying to "I’d oppose adding a brand new EIP so late. Can’t we just repricce selfdestruct to insane high prices and do 0 refunds? Which basically the same as deprecated." Main benefit is no need to test its connections to any EIP. So gas increase doesn't fix this.

  • Potuz

Replying to "I hoped for 180MGas/..." I agree with Maria, we should target 100M/s and try to push the limits on that after the fork, we can probably do up to 400—500 safely
